An apparently unpublished stater from an uncertain Cilician mint
Lot 392
CILICIA. Uncertain. 5th century BC. Stater (Silver, 21 mm, 10.23 g, 12 h). Facing head of a Gorgon with a protruding tongue. Rev. Facing head of a lion or a panther within rectangular incuse square. SNG Levante -. SNG Paris -. SNG von Aulock -. Apparently unpublished and of great interest. Struck from worn dies and with some scratches, otherwise, about very fine.

Style and weight of this enigmatic issue point toward a Cilician origin. No known parallels can be drawn, but the types are distantly reminiscent of the famous late 6th century 'Wappenmünzen' tetradrachms from Athens with a facing Gorgon and a facing panther
